Since the last newsletter in May, the PEOPLE Programme held an International Conference and Study Visit with a focus on the SO6 theme of Civil Society Empowerment. This newsletter issue provides feedback from this event and takes a look at the SO6 theme and the activities and progress that have been made into Civil Society Empowerment through the PEOPLE Programme. We also have a spotlight article on the SO6 sub-project PEPA and a review of the SO6 good practice ‘The Andalusian Digital Commitment project’.
In addition, we review feedback from two UK policy experts who attended the recent Study Visit held in Timis, Romania, to look at the exchange of experience and examples of good practice identified at this event.

Venice International Conference and Study Visit on civil society empowerment

On 8 and 9 June 2011, the Province of Venice hosted the two-day International Conference and Study Visit on the theme of Civil Society Empowerment, one of the six sub-objectives of People project (SO6).
The international conference titled “Empowering civil society for social innovation”, provided knowledge, insight and debate on the necessity to empower the civil society, involving about a hundred of participants, among them policymakers, civil servants, researchers, experts, organisations of the third sector and citizens from the province of Venice and from the seven European partner regions, Andalusia, southeast England, Stockholm region, Malopolska, province of Noord Brabant and Timis.

Spotlight on SO6 sub-project PEPA

PEPA is the unique PEOPLE Sub-objective 6’s co-financed project focusing on the civil society empowerment. This project is therefore in front line for exploring any innovation or experiences leading to empower grassroots organizations and evaluate how administration is supporting their participation to the local governance. Independent and sustainable CSOs (Civil Society Organisations) are the conditions for establishing a healthy democratic environment and play a crescent role for implementing practices leading to sharing governance.
SO6 Good Practice: The Andalusian Digital Commitment project

Andalusia Digital Commitment is an initiative of volunteering promoted by the Ministry of Economy, Innovation and Science (CEIC) of the Regional Government of Andalusia to provide access to Information and Communication Tecnology (ICT) to the whole andalusian society.
